The Theban Legion under the command of Saint Maurice was martyred here at the order of the emperor Maximian in the year 287. The stories vary as to why: one says that as a Christian legion, they refused to offer sacrifices to the Roman gods; the other states that they refused battle against an opposing Christian force.
